Is it time to brush up on your brushing technique? Sometimes our dental routine becomes a mindless habit, and teeth don’t get as clean as they should. Here are the steps to make sure you are brushing properly.
The Right Brush: Be sure to choose an appropriately-sized, soft-bristled brush that reaches all areas of your mouth. Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months– sooner if it appears frayed or worn.
Toothpaste: Be sure to use an ADA-approved fluoride toothpaste. There are specially-formulated toothpastes for sensitive teeth, teeth whitening, and other specific uses–talk with your dentist to see which toothpaste is right for you!
45* Angle: Place the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle to your gums, and make short, back-and-forth strokes. These should be about tooth-wide. Be sure to brush the outer surface, the inner surface, and the chewing surfaces of all your teeth! To clean the inner surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush at a steep vertical angle and execute multiple up-and-down strokes.
2×2: Brush for two minutes, twice a day. If you are just getting back in the habit, try playing a favorite song, or setting a timer. The habit gets easier with consistency, and the payoff is huge!
Floss: Brushing alone isn’t enough for complete oral hygiene. Interdental cleaning, once a day, can greatly improve one’s dental health by removing food particles that can cause plaque build-up. Use ADA approved dental floss or other interdental cleaner made specifically for this purpose.
Balanced Diet: Did you know that the foods you eat (and when you eat them) directly influence your dental health? Eat a balanced diet, and try to avoid between-meal snacking to better protect your teeth.
